GIZ Support to the Pan African University

GIZ support to the Pan African University Institute of Water and Energy Sciences (PAUWES) aims to promote entrepreneurship and employability among African graduates, and support applied research at African higher education institutions.

Title: Consultant - Gender Equity & Diversity

Timeline: December 2017-April 2018

Role: The Pan African University Institute of Water and Energy Sciences in Tlemcen, Algeria, had a mission to support knowledge generation on climate change on the African continent and support future scientists and policymakers working on climate issues — but they were struggling to attract women applicants, and applicants from southern African countries. My task was to conduct a landscape analysis of potential factors of oppression in the local and university environment, and translate these findings into a new gender equity and diversity strategy. This included mainstreaming gender and anti-racism into all PAUWES internal and external communications. I led this work in a multicultural four-person team.

What I'm most proud of: Working with the national communications team to design and implement a new communications strategy that resulted in PAUWES bringing the university’s share of women-identifying students from 19% in 2016-17 to full parity (50%) in 2017-18.
